Box Breathing and the Navy SEALs

Box breathing became widely associated with military training after former US Navy SEAL Commander Mark Divine began teaching it as a central element of mental toughness training.

The Tactical Origins

In high-stress operational situations, the sympathetic nervous system can produce elevated heart rate, impaired fine motor control, and degraded decision-making. Military trainers recognised that controlled breathing could help operators manage elevated arousal and maintain function under pressure.

Mark Divine, who founded the SEALFIT programme, taught box breathing not as a relaxation technique but as a performance regulation tool — a way to bring elevated arousal into a more functional range without loss of alertness. The equal four-count structure is simple enough to use under extreme stress.

Spreading Beyond the Military

The technique spread into law enforcement, emergency medicine, sports psychology, and corporate wellness through books, podcasts, and wellness programmes. In each context, the core structure remained the same — only the framing changed.

The Yoga Connection

The same technique — Sama Vritti Pranayama — was already embedded in yogic practice for centuries before it appeared in military training manuals. The modern interest in box breathing is in many ways a rediscovery of an ancient practice through a performance lens.
