Box Breathing Before and After a Workout

Box breathing can bookend a workout — as a settling practice before exercise and a recovery tool after.

Before a Workout

A brief box breathing session before training is about arriving in a regulated, present state rather than starting from a stressed or distracted one. Many practitioners use 3–5 minutes of 4-4-4-4 after changing and before beginning their warm-up. This is particularly useful when training after a stressful workday.

After a Workout

After intense exercise, heart rate and physiological arousal are elevated. Slow breathing is sometimes used as part of a cool-down to support the return toward baseline. 5–10 minutes seated post-workout is a common approach.

During Rest Periods

In strength training, a brief focused breathing reset between heavy sets — controlled and deliberate even if not full box breathing — is used by some athletes to support recovery between efforts.

Do not practise box breathing during exercise itself unless you are fully comfortable with the technique at rest first. Focus on natural breathing during effort.
