Box Breathing in Yoga: The Sama Vritti Connection

Breathwork Studios · 7 min read · General wellness & educational content only

Box breathing, known in the yogic tradition as Sama Vritti Pranayama, is one of the foundational breathing practices in classical yoga.

Sama Vritti in Pranayama

Within the classical pranayama system, Sama Vritti is categorised as an equalising or balancing practice. "Sama" means equal, and "vritti" refers to the fluctuations of the mind and breath. The equal-phase structure is understood to produce a balanced state — neither excessively energised nor overly lethargic.

Where It Fits in Yoga Practice

In traditional yoga, pranayama is the fourth of Patanjali's eight limbs, practised after asana (postures) and before the internal practices of pratyahara and meditation. Sama Vritti is often used in this transitional space — settling the nervous system after physical practice and preparing the mind for deeper concentration.

What Modern Yoga Classes Teach

Most modern yoga classes that teach box breathing present it as a secular, accessible tool — the yogic philosophical framework is often set aside. This is not incorrect, simply a different context for the same technique.

What the Yogic Framework Adds

For those interested in the broader context, the yogic view of the breath as a bridge between body and mind, and developing a sustained relationship with the breath over years of practice, adds a dimension that the performance-oriented framing of box breathing does not include.
