The same four-phase equal-count breath technique appears under several different names. Here is what each tells you.
The most common modern name. The "box" refers to the four equal sides — a visual metaphor for the four equal phases. Widely used in performance, wellness, and app contexts.
Interchangeable with box breathing. More common in educational and therapy settings. No technique difference whatsoever.
The military and law enforcement framing — emphasises practical arousal management under pressure. Same technique.
A count-first description rather than a metaphor name. Useful when comparing with other count-based methods like 4-7-8.
The classical Sanskrit name from the yoga tradition. Sama = equal, vritti = fluctuation. See Box Breathing vs Pranayama.
All these names describe the same core structure: equal inhale, hold, exhale, and pause phases. The name you encounter simply reflects the context in which the technique is being taught.
Practice box breathing with guided sessions, streaks, and relaxing music.
