Box Breathing vs Square Breathing: Any Difference?

Breathwork Studios · 4 min read · General wellness & educational content only

Short answer: no meaningful difference. Box breathing and square breathing are two names for the same technique — an equal four-phase breathing cycle.

Why Two Names?

"Box breathing" is more commonly used in tactical, military, and performance wellness contexts. "Square breathing" is more common in educational, therapy, and children's wellness materials.

Are There Any Actual Differences?

No. The technique is inhale–hold–exhale–pause with equal counts in both cases. Whether a guide calls it box breathing or square breathing, the instruction is the same.

Other Names for the Same Technique

The same technique is also known as tactical breathing, 4x4 breathing, and Sama Vritti Pranayama. See Box Breathing Other Names for the full list.

If you encounter a "square breathing" and a "box breathing" resource that seem to describe different things, the difference is almost certainly the count length (3-3-3-3 vs 4-4-4-4) — not the technique name.
