Box Breathing Variations: Beyond the 4-4-4-4
Breathwork Studios · 7 min read · General wellness & educational content only
The 4-4-4-4 count is the most widely taught form of box breathing, but it is not the only option. Equal-phase breathing at different counts is still box breathing — and changing the count changes the pace, the difficulty, and the likely effect.
Shorter Counts: Beginners and Children
- 2-2-2-2: Very gentle. Good for young children or first-time practitioners who find the 4-count uncomfortable.
- 3-3-3-3: A useful intermediate step before moving to 4-4-4-4.
Standard
- 4-4-4-4: The widely taught version. Approximately 4 breaths per minute. Well-suited to most adults for most purposes.
Longer Counts: Slower and Deeper
- 5-5-5-5: Slightly closer to the resonance frequency range (~3.3 breaths/min). Commonly reported as more deeply settling. A natural progression for experienced practitioners.
- 6-6-6-6: Approximately 2.5 breaths per minute. For experienced practitioners only — requires comfort with longer breath holds. Not recommended for beginners.
Which to Choose?
Start with 4-4-4-4 and practise until it feels comfortable. Move to 5-5-5-5 if you want a slower, more deeply relaxing practice. Comfort and sustainability are more important than longer counts.
Do not force longer counts. If a longer hold produces strain, discomfort, or dizziness, return to a shorter count. Never practise extended breath holds if you have a respiratory or cardiovascular condition without medical clearance.
