Box Breathing Before Bed: A Sleep Wind-Down Routine

Breathwork Studios · 7 min read · General wellness & educational content only

Not a sleep disorder treatment. If you have a diagnosed sleep disorder, please work with a healthcare provider. This is a general wellness routine.

Why Before Bed?

The transition from the active, engaged state of the day into a state suitable for sleep is a physiological shift. Slow, rhythmic breathing before bed supports this shift by activating the parasympathetic nervous system and providing an attentional anchor that interrupts racing thoughts.

A Simple Pre-Sleep Routine

  1. Environment first: Dim the lights. Put your phone face-down or out of reach.
  2. Timing: Begin 15–30 minutes before your intended sleep time.
  3. Position: Lying in bed, on your back if comfortable, arms at your sides.
  4. Start slowly: Take 2–3 natural breaths to settle before beginning the count.
  5. Count: Begin with 4-4-4-4. If it feels comfortable after 5 minutes, try 5-5-5-5.
  6. Duration: 5–15 minutes. Many people fall asleep during the session — which is fine.
  7. After: If still awake, move gently to sleep without screens or stimulating content.

Combining With Sleep Hygiene

Box breathing is a complement to good sleep hygiene — not a replacement for it. Consistent wake and sleep times, limited evening caffeine, and reduced blue light exposure all contribute alongside breathwork.
