Box Breathing and Heart Rate Variability (HRV)

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the natural variation in time between heartbeats — a reflection of how dynamically the autonomic nervous system responds to demands. Higher HRV is generally associated with greater autonomic flexibility.

Breathing and HRV

Breathing is one of the most direct influences on short-term HRV. The natural rise and fall of heart rate with each breath — respiratory sinus arrhythmia — is the primary driver of high-frequency HRV. Slow breathing amplifies this fluctuation, producing higher HRV in the immediate term.

Resonance Frequency Breathing

Research has identified a breathing rate of approximately 6 breaths per minute as particularly effective for maximising HRV in most adults — sometimes called "resonance frequency" breathing. Box breathing at a 4-count produces approximately 4 breaths per minute — still within the slow breathing range researchers study.

What This Means for Box Breathing

Box breathing is not primarily a targeted HRV intervention — it is a general wellness practice. If HRV improvement is a specific goal, experimenting with a 5-count (5-5-5-5) may bring you closer to the resonance frequency range.

HRV is influenced by many factors beyond breathing — sleep, exercise, stress, and health status all play significant roles. Box breathing is one of several wellness practices associated with favourable HRV patterns in research.
