The vagus nerve is the primary nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system — connecting the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut, and playing a central role in how the body responds to and recovers from stress.
With each exhale, the vagus nerve is proposed to become more active — slowing the heart rate and promoting parasympathetic tone. The pulmonary stretch receptors in the lungs also send signals along the vagus nerve with each breath cycle.
Vagal tone is a general term for the baseline activity of the vagus nerve. Higher vagal tone is associated in research with better stress recovery, emotional regulation, and cardiovascular flexibility. It is also closely related to heart rate variability (HRV).
Slow, rhythmic breathing is the most studied behavioural influence on vagal tone. By slowing the breath to approximately 4 cycles per minute with structured pauses, box breathing sits within the range of slow breathing researchers have studied for vagal effects. The proposed pathway: slow breath → baroreflex activation → increased vagal output → calmer physiological state.
These are proposed mechanisms — not certainties. The research on breathing and vagal tone is promising but ongoing. Individual responses vary.
